Nokia has always been the best in class according to the Greenpeace Green Guide. The reason why Sony Ericsson now is the leader is because Nokia has penalty point deducted for deficiencies in takeback practice in Thailand, Russia and Argentina

Greenpeace tested the implementation of product takeback programmes in six countries where Motorola, Nokia and Sony Ericsson claim, on their websites, to operate product takeback programmes. Nokia representatives in the Philippines, Thailand, Argentina, Russia and India were not informed about their companies’ own programmes and in many cases provided misleading information. Motorola staff in the Philippines, Thailand and India was unable to direct customers to collection points in their respective countries

Ranking criteria explained

The ranking criteria reflect the demands of the Toxic Tech campaign to the electronics companies. Our two demands are that companies should:

• clean up their products by eliminating hazardous substances;
• takeback and recycle their products responsibly once they become obsolete.

The two issues are connected. The use of harmful chemicals in electronics prevents their safe recycling when the products are discarded. Companies scored marks out of 30 this has then been calculated to a mark out of 10 for simplicity

Information about the Sony Ericsson K660 was leaked earlier this week. Two other models were revealed at a press conference late Tuesday evening. The entry-level model named W380 and the mid-range model W890.

The W380 highlights are: Clamshell model with gesture control where alarm and calls are muted by moving the hand in front of the phone. The camera could be better with just 1.3 megapixel resolution. But this is holding the price down of course. W380 support Bluetooth Stereo (A2DP) for stereo transmission to your Bluetooth stereo headset. The design is something slightly different. You probably love it or hate it.

Sony Ericsson W890 has approximately the same dimensions as the W800 Walkman model. It is only 9.9mm thin but still has room for a 3.2 megapixel camera. Sony Ericsson has finally started to ship phones models with support for UMTS and EDGE networks. The supported networks by W890 are 850/900/1800/1900 WCDMA 2100, EDGE and UMTS. A 2GB Memory Stick Micro card is included in the package.

The K660 is promoted as a Web-optimised phone. It has Google Maps for Mobile pre-installed. HSDPA for fast downloading but only a 2.0 megapixel camera. All Sony Ericsson K-series models are usually promoted as a Cyber-Shot phones, but the word Cyber-Shot is not mentioned at all in the press release.

Following Sony Ericssonss acquisition of the Swedish software company from Symbian Ltd on 2nd February, there has been significant progress with regards to UIQ technology, handsets and licensing. Monday’s announcement will further enhance the strength of UIQ as highly competitive and independent cross-vendor user interface platform for business and multimedia feature phones.

UIQ technology is used in mobile phones from Sony Ericsson, Motorola, BenQ and Arima.
